Drs. Martha & Tom Gallagher have been going on PAMS Medical Missions since 1995, when Dr. Efrain Montesinos invited them to come along on the first Medical Mission to Ayacucho. As a Professor of Nursing at Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio, Martha was able to use her summers off and schedule multiple missions back to back. So, it may not be as surprising to learn that she has participated in 30 missions!
In 1999, while visiting Tom’s family, they discovered that a distant cousin was serving as Parish Priest in Chorrillos, a barrio of Lima. After establishing contact and making the necessary arrangements, Tom & Martha led their own Medical Mission to the Parish clinic in 2004. The team consisted of a couple doctors, nurses, and nursing students from Lourdes who were looking for a multi-cultural nursing experience. Every year since, a team has gone during spring-break to assist and supply the clinic.
In addition to seeing patients at the clinic, they provide free health and vision screening to the 500+ children at the elementary school across the street. Many are given medicines for de-worming, all are given toothbrushes and toothpaste, and $15 is provided for each child needing to be fit for glasses, a service done by an optician in the Parish. Those needing further medical attention are referred to the clinic or other local health facilities.
Prenatal vitamins, respiratory nebulizers and medicines are left for the clinic to administer throughout the year.
