Selva in Action welcomes new Medical Director
Selva in Action (SIA) is proud to welcome Dr. Stalin Fran Vilcarromero Llaja as our new Medical Director. Stalin joins an established group of volunteers who, for almost 10 years, have served thousands of villagers residing in the Amazon basin. He is a research physician with the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit Six (NAMRU-6) in Iquitos (7 years). He received his medical degree from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH-Lima) and holds a Masters Degree in Family and Community Health from the Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia Peruana (UNAP-Iquitos). Stalin also attended the London School of Tropical Medicine, the University of Florida (Department of Environment and Global Health), and the University of Triangulo Mineiro (Brazil).
Stalin specializes in research and treatment of diseases such as dengue, influenza, leptospirosis, malaria, chikungunya, equine encephalitis, and others. He is a member of the institutional review boards of the Regional Hospital and the Regional Department of Health in Loreto and a published author in a variety of journals including the Emerging Infectious Disease Journal and American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the Pan American Dengue Research Network Meeting."
Stalin teaches the Tropical Medicine course at Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia Peruana (UNAP-Iquitos) and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH-Lima). Additionally, he is the principal mentor of the Scientific Society of Medical students of the Peruvian Amazon (SOCIEMAP-UNAP). Stalin has been an attendee and speaker at several international meetings, including those sponsored by the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
