Words from the Galdos Family

A piece of Manuel's heart always remained in Perú. Seeing the dire need, especially for women, in rural areas in Perú inspired him to pursue medicine as a young child, and he remained dedicated to these communities.

He found great joy and fulfillment through his work with the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS). He participated in many PAMS missions during his career, including trips to Piura and Cajamarca.

He loved giving lectures to young Peruvian medical students and providing direct care to Peruvian women who did not otherwise have access.

He was always eager to bring new medical supplies to remote locations, areas the supplies would never otherwise reach.

Manuel's true calling in life was serving these communities and giving them recognition, respect, and opportunity.

Ahora su corazón está con ellos.

The Galdos family welcomes donations to the Peruvian American Medical Society as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers.

Medical Missions

Motivated by a shared passion

The Medical Missions conducted by PAMS Members are the pride of our organization.  Since the late 1970's, we have conducted hundreds of medical and educational missions throughout Perú.  Our medical and non-medical volunteers are motivated by a shared passion to help those in desperate need of medical care.

By working collaboratively with local providers and medical schools, free care has been given to thousands of patients.  Over the years, millions of dollars in equipment, supplies, and medications have been donated to support the missions and to modernize local healthcare facilities.

Medical Missions also work with rural medical posts and local orphanages to provide free health and dental care, and donate clothes, shoes, computers and necessary facility upgrades.

Medical Education

Reinventing our approach

As a result of the pandemic, PAMS has adapted its approach to improving medical education in Perú.  We have used available tools and technologies to deliver virtual activities such as online lectures, multidisciplinary webinars, and virtual discussions on clinical cases.

Since March 2020, we have conducted interdisciplinary webinars with more than 15,000 participants from 23 countries in the Americas, Europe, and Australia.  These activities have led to publications in Peruvian medical journals.

We have expanded efforts to promote clinical investigations in Perú. And we are developing a competitive mentoring program in clinical investigation for Peruvian medical trainees and well-trained Peruvian specialist who reside in the Unites States, Perú, and Europe have been identified as mentors.

Disaster Relief

Helping overcome devastation

Throughout the years and through the efforts of our mission directors, PAMS has provided support to Perú when disaster strikes.  Whether earthquakes, floods, or global pandemics, PAMS members and friends have generously stepped up with economic assistance to help Perú overcome devastation.

During the current pandemic, the people of Perú have suffered immensely with one of the highest COVID-19 mortality rates in the world, and a significant rise in poverty and hunger.  Generous donations allowed our mission directors to provide personal protective equipment, disinfectants, plus oximeters, portable oxygen equipment, medicines, drinking water and food to communities throughout Perú.

With the persistence of COVID-19 in Perú, their need for support continues.
