The Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS) was founded in a gathering at Dr. Henry Remy's home, where Dr. Augusto Paredes, his wife Noelle Paredes, and several of his classmates from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, the first and then only medical university in Peru, met and establish the organization. The group deliberated late into the night about the name of the Society, considering alternatives like the American Peruvian Society, but finally agreed upon the Peruvian American Medical Society in the early morning hours.
Since its founding, PAMS has grown significantly and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. The organization has evolved into a robust network of physicians and volunteers who lead medical missions throughout Peru. These missions are vital in providing care in underserved areas, bringing advanced medical practices, treatments, and surgeries to those who need them most.
Moreover, PAMS is committed to advancing medical education. The society offers the latest in medical training and education at no cost to medical students and physicians in Peru and Latin America, ensuring that the local medical community remains up-to-date with global standards. This effort not only enhances local healthcare but also builds a bridge of collaboration and knowledge-sharing between the U.S. and Latin American medical communities.
The contributions of Dr. Augusto Paredes, a cardiologist and one of the founders, are especially honored in this context. His vision and dedication, along with those of his peers, have laid the foundation for an enduring organization that continues to make a substantial impact on healthcare in Peru and beyond. His wife, Mrs. Noelle Paredes, fondly recalls the origins of the Society and the passion that drove its creation, reflecting a legacy of service and commitment to advancing medical care and education.
